About Cobb Can Move & how to play

What Is Cobb Can Move?

Cobb Can Move is a free, single-player survival horror game created by abho with collaborators Vystel and Federico. Originally developed for Major Jam 7: Wild, it combines top-down pixel-art exploration, resource management, and an unusual horror mechanic: the monster becomes more dangerous as the rules change.

You control a small, pale character trapped inside a dark, maze-like dungeon. Somewhere in the shadows lurks Cobb, a red creature with an enormous grin and unnaturally long arms.

Your mission is to complete each floor's objectives while avoiding Cobb. That usually means collecting coal, feeding furnaces, activating electrical breakers, and finding an escape route.

The challenge is not simply running away. As you progress, Cobb gains different abilities that force you to rethink how you move through the dungeon.

Cobb Can Move offers a seven-level Story mode and an Endless mode for players who want to test their survival skills against increasingly unpredictable situations. The game runs directly in a desktop browser without requiring a download.

The Core Twist: Cobb Keeps Changing

The defining feature of Cobb Can Move is its changing rule system. Each level introduces conditions that affect how Cobb hunts you or how you must survive.

Some of the most important rules include:

  • Cobb Can Move: Cobb is no longer a stationary threat. You must account for a creature that actively moves through the dungeon.
  • Cobb Can See: Cobb can detect you through its line of sight. Walls and corners become essential for breaking visual contact.
  • Cobb Can Hear: Your actions can reveal your location. Noisy interactions and thrown objects become more dangerous.
  • Cobb Can Smell: Cobb can track your scent, making repeated trips along the same route risky.
  • Cobb Can Reach: Cobb's extended grabbing range makes close escapes harder than they appear.
  • Cobb Can Duplicate: Multiple Cobbs can hunt you, creating threats from different directions.
  • Cobb Can Move Faster: Cobb becomes quicker, leaving less time to react during a chase.

Some floors can also introduce survival problems such as freezing or starvation. These require you to seek warmth or find food while avoiding the monster.

Example: Imagine collecting coal from the far side of a dark corridor. When Cobb can see, you should use walls to break its line of sight. When Cobb can smell, repeatedly retracing that same corridor may allow it to follow your trail. The objective has not changed, but the safest solution has.

This changing relationship between familiar rooms and new dangers makes every attempt feel different.

How to Play Cobb Can Move

Step 1: Launch the Game and Learn the Controls

Open the official Cobb Can Move page on itch.io and select Run game. Choose Story mode for your first attempt.

The controls are deliberately simple:

  • WASD or Arrow Keys: Move your character.
  • E or Space: Interact with objects, pick up items, activate switches, and use or throw held objects.
  • Gamepad: Use the directional controls to move and a face button to interact.

If the keyboard does not respond, click inside the game window to give it focus.

Step 2: Read the Active Rule

Before exploring a level, pay attention to the rule displayed on screen.

The rule tells you what danger to expect. For example, a level where Cobb can hear requires a different approach from one where Cobb can see.

Take a moment to understand the current condition before rushing into an unfamiliar corridor.

Step 3: Collect Coal and Maintain Light

Explore the dungeon to locate pieces of coal and the furnace that needs them.

Approach coal and press the interaction key to collect it. Return to the appropriate furnace and interact to deliver the fuel.

The game's opening area introduces an objective such as Deliver coal: 0/3, showing how many pieces are needed.

Furnaces provide important light and warmth. Since Cobb generally avoids illuminated areas, keeping useful routes lit can improve your chances of survival.

However, carrying coal through dark corridors creates opportunities for Cobb to approach. Plan both your collection route and your return journey.

Step 4: Activate Breakers and Avoid Cobb

As you progress, locate and activate the electrical breakers or other objectives needed to advance.

Watch for Cobb while moving through corridors and around obstacles. Avoid narrow dead ends where the creature can trap you.

Rocks offer a useful defensive option. Pick one up and throw it in the direction you are facing. A direct hit can briefly stun Cobb, giving you an opportunity to escape.

Be careful: throwing rocks makes noise, which can attract Cobb when its hearing ability is active.

Step 5: Reach the Exit and Adapt

Once the current floor's objectives are complete, navigate toward the exit while staying clear of Cobb.

The next level introduces another configuration of hazards and abilities. Do not assume that the route or tactic that worked previously will remain safe.

Complete all seven Story levels to reach the conclusion, or try Endless mode for a continuing survival challenge.

Survival Tips and Strategies

Read Before You Run

The rule displayed at the beginning of each level is your most valuable information. Use it to decide whether to prioritize avoiding sight lines, limiting noise, creating distance, or reducing repeated travel.

Use Light Strategically

A burning furnace can provide a safer area, but lighting every possible room is not always necessary. Concentrate on keeping the routes you actually need manageable.

Avoid Repeating the Same Path

When Cobb can smell, traveling back and forth through the same corridor can make your movements easier to track. Whenever possible, create a loop that takes you from coal to the furnace without unnecessary backtracking.

Keep a Rock for Emergencies

Rocks can buy a short escape window if Cobb gets too close. Try to line up your throw before using one, because a missed rock may leave you exposed.

Watch Your Distance

Under the extended-reach rule, Cobb can grab you from farther away than its appearance suggests. Give the monster extra space around corners, doorways, and narrow passages.

Learn From Every Failure

If Cobb catches you, consider whether the problem was visibility, noise, scent, distance, or a poor escape route. Understanding the cause of failure is more valuable than immediately repeating the same strategy.

Story Mode vs. Endless Mode

Story Mode provides seven increasingly challenging levels with a defined conclusion. It is the recommended starting point because it introduces the game's objectives and changing rules progressively.

Endless Mode emphasizes replayability through procedural layouts and changing conditions. It begins with more demanding rule combinations rather than repeating the gentler introductory floors.

Both modes rely on the same core skills: understanding the current threat, managing resources, navigating dark environments, and escaping Cobb.

Is Cobb Can Move Free?

Yes. Cobb Can Move is playable for free through its official itch.io HTML5 version. The developer also provides a Windows download with optional payment.

The browser version supports keyboard and gamepad controls. It is best experienced on a desktop or laptop because native touchscreen controls are not provided.

Is Cobb Can Move Scary?

Cobb Can Move uses darkness, threatening monster behavior, unsettling pixel-art visuals, and sudden encounters to create tension.

Although its graphics are relatively simple, the combination of limited visibility and unpredictable hunting rules can make encounters intense. Players who enjoy short indie horror games with strategic decision-making are likely to appreciate its atmosphere.

Why Play Cobb Can Move?

Cobb Can Move stands out because it makes the monster's changing abilities the main source of difficulty. Instead of relying entirely on reflexes or jump scares, it challenges players to understand rules and make intelligent decisions under pressure.

Its short sessions, accessible controls, procedural layouts, and two game modes make it appealing to both casual horror fans and players seeking a difficult survival challenge.
